NAN vs Lactogen: Differences, Stages and Prices in Nigeria
NAN and Lactogen are both baby formulas made by Nestlé. NAN is Nestlé’s premium range, built around its OPTIPRO® protein blend. Lactogen is Nestlé’s more affordable everyday range, and some tins add the probiotic L. reuteri. Both come in the same three stages: 1 from birth, 2 from 6 months and 3 from 1 year. This guide compares them stage by stage, shows what each costs in Nigeria today and explains how to choose.

What NAN offers
NAN’s main feature is OPTIPRO®, Nestlé’s name for its protein blend. Nestlé says it gives the right quality and quantity of protein for each stage. The tins we sell also list DHA (an omega-3 fat) alongside vitamins and minerals. NAN comes in two lines:
- NAN OptiPro (400g): the everyday NAN tin for stages 1, 2 and 3. NAN OptiPro 1 is the most popular NAN in our stores.
- NAN Pro (800g): a larger imported tin for stages 1, 2 and 3. Its pack lists DHA and ARA plus iron, calcium and vitamin D. It suits families who prefer to buy fewer, bigger tins.
- PreNAN: a special formula for babies born early or with a low birth weight. Use it only when a doctor or hospital advises it.
What Lactogen offers
Lactogen gives complete, balanced nutrition for each stage at a lower price than NAN. Some tins add extras:
- Lactogen 1 (350g): the pack lists whey protein, taurine, L-carnitine and the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri, with a full range of vitamins and minerals.
- Lactogen Pro 2: a follow-on formula with the probiotic L. reuteri, vitamins A, C and D, iron and calcium.
- Lactogen 3 and Pro 3: growing-up milks for children from 1 year, as part of a balanced diet.

How to choose between NAN and Lactogen
- Start with your doctor’s advice. If your baby was born early, has a medical condition or reacts badly to a formula, ask your doctor which one to use.
- Match the stage to your baby’s age: 1 from birth, 2 from 6 months, 3 from 1 year. Do not give a stage 3 milk to a young baby.
- Think about cost over months. Formula is a long-term spend. Lactogen gives complete nutrition at a lower monthly cost; NAN adds Nestlé’s OPTIPRO protein and DHA.
- Stay with what works. If your baby feeds well, sleeps well and grows well on one formula, there is usually no need to change.
Can you switch between NAN and Lactogen?
Many babies move between the two without trouble, because both are Nestlé formulas made for the same stages. Ask your doctor before you switch. Then make the change over a few days rather than all at once, and watch for changes in feeding, stooling or skin. Never mix two formulas in one bottle.
How to spot a genuine tin
- The seal under the lid is intact, and the tin is not dented or swollen.
- The batch number and expiry date are printed clearly and match on the tin and the base.
- The label is sharp and spelled correctly, and the scoop is inside.
- The price is not far below the usual market price. Very cheap tins are a warning sign.
